How to Use Wool Fertiliser Pellets

Natural Feeding for Healthy Soil and Strong Plants

Sneem Organic Wool Fertiliser Pellets are easy to use and work naturally with your soil. Made from 100% Irish sheep wool, the pellets provide long-lasting nutrition while improving soil structure, retaining moisture, and supporting healthier plant growth.

As the wool breaks down, it releases nitrogen slowly over time while also adding organic matter back into the soil. At the same time, the pellets act as a natural mulch layer, helping suppress weeds and reduce competition for nutrients.

Because they release nutrients gradually and improve overall soil condition, wool fertiliser pellets are ideal for vegetable gardens, flower beds, containers, trees, lawns, and larger planting areas.

How Wool Fertiliser Works

Wool fertiliser pellets work differently from fast-acting synthetic fertilisers.

Instead of releasing nutrients all at once, the wool fibres slowly break down in the soil. Around 50–70% of the nitrogen is released over 6–8 months, providing steady feeding throughout the growing season. The remaining nutrients continue to release afterwards, ensuring long-term soil fertility.

Even more importantly, any leftover wool residue from the first application continues to break down. This means a second application benefits from up to 70% nitrogen release from the existing material already in the soil, improving soil health over time rather than depleting it.

Wool fibres also act like a natural sponge, absorbing water and releasing it gradually. This helps maintain consistent moisture levels, reduces watering needs, and protects plants during dry periods.

In addition, the pellets provide natural protection and soil coverage:

  • Slug deterrent properties – wool fibres create a surface that slugs avoid
  • Weed suppression – acts like a natural mulch layer, helping reduce weed growth
  • Improved soil structure – enhances aeration and supports root development
  • Supports soil biology – encourages beneficial microbes and organic activity

Key Benefits:

  • Slow-release nitrogen over months
  • Improves soil moisture retention
  • Stores and gradually releases water
  • Adds organic matter to soil
  • Suppresses weeds naturally (mulching effect)
  • Helps deter slugs without chemicals
  • Reduces watering frequency
  • Fully natural and chemical-free

Application Guidelines

Below are general guidelines for using wool fertiliser pellets in different areas of the garden. Pellets should be mixed into the soil before planting or lightly incorporated into the topsoil

Garden Beds

Mix pellets into the soil before planting.

Recommended rate:

approximately 100g per m²

This provides steady nitrogen release for strong leafy growth and consistent crop development, while also helping retain moisture and reduce weed competition.

Pots and Containers

Add pellets to potting mix before planting.

Recommended rate:

10 grams per litre of soil

Mix evenly through the compost to provide long-lasting nutrition while improving water retention in containers, which tend to dry out quickly.

Trees and Shrubs

Apply pellets around the root zone and lightly mix into the soil.

Recommended rate:

70-140g per tree

Water after application. The pellets will slowly release nutrients while improving soil structure and supporting long-term root health.

Flower Beds

Mix pellets into the top layer of soil before planting flowers.

Recommended rate:

80–120g per square metre

The pellets act as both a fertiliser and a natural mulch, helping to suppress weeds while feeding plants over time.

Raised Beds

Raised beds benefit greatly from wool fertiliser due to improved moisture control.

Recommended rate:

100–150g per square metre

Mix pellets evenly into the soil before planting to support consistent growth and reduce watering needs.

Lawns

For lawn establishment or repair, mix pellets lightly into the soil.

Recommended rate:

80–100g per square metre

Water after application to activate nutrient release and improve root development.

When to Apply

Wool fertiliser pellets can be applied throughout the growing season.

Best Times to Apply

Spring

Prepare beds and provide nutrients for early growth while improving soil condition after winter.

Planting Time

Mix directly into soil when planting vegetables, flowers, trees, or shrubs.

Mid Season

Top up soil nutrients and support continued plant growth, especially for heavy feeders.

Because of the slow-release nature, one application can feed plants for 6–8 months, with residual nutrients continuing beyond that.

Tips for Best Results

• Mix pellets into soil rather than leaving them on the surface
• Water after application to activate nutrient release
• Use during planting for best long-term results
• Combine with compost to further improve soil quality
• Apply to flower beds as a surface layer for natural weed suppression
• Reapply seasonally to build long-term soil fertility
